The first phase of Infineon Gulin's 200mm silicon carbide fab was completed
Infineon has completed the first phase of construction of a 200mm silicon carbide (SiC) power fab in Gulin, Malaysia. The company plans to officially open the Gulin 3 fab module in August, and SiC production will begin by the end of 2024. The fab is the centerpiece of the Malaysian government's $100 billion plan to boost chip production in the country.

In August last year, Infineon announced that it would build the world's largest 200mm silicon carbide (SiC) power fab in Kulin, Malaysia, with customer support including €5 billion in customer orders for automotive and industrial applications and around €1 billion in upfront payments.

Over the next five years, Infineon will invest up to €5 billion in the second phase of Module Three. By the end of 2030, this investment, together with the planned conversion of 200 mm SiC at the Firach and Gulin plants, is expected to increase SiC's annual revenue to approximately 7 billion euros.

At present, the industry is focusing on the layout of the silicon carbide market. From the application field point of view, silicon carbide in automotive, renewable energy and other power density and efficiency is extremely important in the application market is still showing the trend of accelerated penetration, TrendForce consulting said that the overall market demand for silicon carbide in the next few years will maintain growth trend. It is estimated that the global SiC Power Device market size is expected to reach 9.17 billion US dollars in 2028.
